Social platform X is rolling out a new security measure aimed at tackling one of the most persistent threats in crypto: account takeovers used to promote scams.

The company will soon automatically lock any account that mentions cryptocurrency for the first time. Users will then need to complete additional verification steps before they can post again.

According to Head of Product Nikita Bier, the feature is designed to remove the main incentive behind these attacks. Hackers often gain access to legitimate accounts and use them to promote fraudulent tokens, fake giveaways, or phishing links. By blocking first-time crypto posts, X hopes to make hijacked accounts less useful for scammers.

The update follows a growing wave of phishing incidents on the platform. In many cases, attackers trick users into entering login details on fake websites that closely mimic X’s interface. Once inside, they lock out the original owner and begin posting scam content.

Common tactics include “double your money” schemes and fake airdrops. Others involve impersonating well-known figures to gain trust and drive clicks to malicious links.

Bier also pointed to email providers as part of the problem, noting that phishing emails often bypass detection systems and reach users directly.
